About the Course

This comprehensive course is designed to equip students with essential skills in programming, spreadsheet software, and statistical analysis. It covers three core modules:

1. Computer Programming Basics (FORTRAN) This module introduces the fundamentals of FORTRAN, a powerful language for scientific computation. Students will learn FORTRAN keywords, commands, and logical operations, including relational operators, iteration techniques, array variables, and matrix operations. The course also covers functions, subroutines, and basic problem-solving approaches using FORTRAN.

 

2. Introduction to Spreadsheet Software (MS Excel) This section focuses on mastering Microsoft Excel for data organization and analysis. Topics include creating and formatting spreadsheets, working with functions and formulas, and generating charts, tables, and graphs. Students will integrate Excel with Word documents, perform simple calculations, and solve simultaneous equations (e.g., chemical equilibrium problems) using Excel's SOLVER and Goal Seek functions. Additional emphasis is placed on numerical modeling, including pH metric titration simulations, curve fitting, regression analysis, and numerical differentiation/integration. Key Excel functions such as LINEST and least squares are also explored.

 

3. Statistical Analysis This module delves into fundamental statistical concepts, focusing on the Gaussian distribution and measurement errors and their impact on datasets. Students will perform descriptive statistics using Excel, conduct significance tests (including the T-test and F-test), and analyze real-world data scenarios. This hands-on approach ensures proficiency in statistical methods essential for scientific research and data interpretation.
